Subgrade Stabilization: Creating Solid Working Platforms Without Undercutting

Lime or Cement Modification for Subgrades

Solid Working Platform

Stabilize Soft Subgrades Without Removing the Soil

Unstable, saturated, or expansive subgrades are one of the most common—and costly—challenges in site development. Rather than removing and replacing poor soils, chemical soil modification using lime or cement creates a strong, stable working platform that supports construction equipment and permanent structures.

At Mt. Carmel Stabilization Group, we help general contractors, engineers, and developers reduce project delays and save costs by treating existing soils in place—turning a liability into a load-bearing solution.

What is Chemical Soil Modification?

Chemical modification involves blending Portland cement or lime-based products—such as quicklime, hydrated lime, or lime kiln dust (LKD)—into the subgrade to improve workability and strength.

This Process:

  • Creates a stable foundation for slab-on-grade construction, embankments, and pavement layers
  • Reduces soil plasticity and shrink-swell potential (especially in fat clays)
  • Improves moisture content and eliminates the need for undercutting
  • Supports fast-tracking of construction schedules by making the site immediately workable

The strength of chemically modified soils continues to increase over time, providing long-term performance for roads, industrial pads, energy facilities, and more.

When to Use Lime or Cement Modification

This method is ideal for:

  • Wet, cohesive, or expansive clay soils
  • Sites with limited space or time for excavation
  • Projects that require immediate equipment access
  • Reducing undercut volumes on deep fills or variable soils

We customize every treatment plan based on soil type, project design, and environmental factors to ensure lasting performance.
