Subgrade Chemical Stabilization: Extending Heavy Pavement Life Without Premature Failure
Lime and Cement Stabilization Can Be Used Structurally

Improve Pavement Performance with Lime or Cement Stabilization
When your pavement system demands long-term durability, chemical stabilization offers a proven, engineered solution. By using lime- or cement-based products to increase subgrade strength, Mt. Carmel Stabilization Group helps reduce the required thickness of costly layers like aggregate, asphalt, or concrete—saving time and money without sacrificing performance.
Led by our Director of Engineering and supported by accredited testing labs, we provide project-specific mix designs that meet strength requirements and extend pavement life.
What Is Chemical Stabilization?
Chemical stabilization strengthens soil by adding lime or cement to achieve a target strength value (such as CBR or MR) that can be incorporated directly into the project’s structural design.
This process differs from chemical modification, which focuses on workability. Instead, stabilization creates long-term load-bearing strength for subgrades used in:
- Roadways and highways
- Industrial and commercial pavements
- Slab-on-grade foundations
- Parking lots and port facilities

Key Benefits of Chemically Stabilized Soil
Reduced pavement thickness – thinner asphalt or concrete sections needed
Lower project costs – replace expensive imported materials
Improved load-bearing capacity – reduce the risk of subgrade failure
Faster construction – improved compaction and sequencing
Enhanced lifespan – better long-term performance in challenging conditions
How It Works
- Soil Testing & Mix Design: Partner labs determine the right chemical and rate
- Application: Lime, cement, or blended products are mixed in-place with site soils
- Strength Gain: Stabilized soil reaches the required values for structural use
- Design Integration: Enhanced CBR, MR, or k-values are used in pavement or slab design
This allows engineers to design for performance with confidence—and deliver value to the owner at every stage of the build.
