Mt. Carmel Stabilization Group President Neil Ryan Speaks on Leadership at Thin Blue 1st Luncheon
Neil Ryan, President of Mt. Carmel Stabilization Group, delivered a powerful address on leadership and selflessness at a Thin Blue 1st luncheon, connecting these principles to both his personal life and his role as a leader. Speaking to an audience of law enforcement officers, Ryan emphasized the importance of selflessness, a core value of Mt. Carmel Stabilization, and its role in shaping effective leadership.
"This training on selflessness is perfectly aligned with the core values we’ve developed at Mt. Carmel," Ryan explained. "Selflessness wasn't something we created in a meeting—it emerged naturally from what we saw in our people. It’s the heartbeat of our company." Ryan’s commitment to this value resonated deeply with the audience, particularly in an industry that faces high-pressure, dangerous situations daily. He also noted how unusual it is to find selflessness as a core value in most companies, making Mt. Carmel’s approach unique.
Ryan's speech went beyond just discussing selflessness as a corporate value. He urged the audience to think of leadership as something that applies to everyone, not just those at the top. "Leadership is horizontal—it applies above, below, and to your peers. Even if you don't have anyone reporting to you, you still need to lead yourself," he reminded the attendees, reinforcing the idea that leadership is about personal accountability and growth in every aspect of life.
Ryan also asked the audience to reflect on the characteristics that define a great leader, encouraging participation and collaboration. Some key traits discussed included humility, discipline, mutual respect, accountability, and trustworthiness. These traits, Ryan explained, are the foundation of great leadership, but what makes leadership truly impactful is a relentless focus on developing others. "I believe that it’s my job to get the absolute most out of every person around me," Ryan said. "Whether they work for me or with me, I encourage them to reach their maximum potential."
One of the standout moments of Ryan’s talk was when he discussed how leadership at Mt. Carmel revolves around fostering relationships and accountability. Ryan explained that, rather than using "harsh tactics," the company focuses on development and encouragement. "We don't take terminations lightly. When we invest in people, we try to maximize their potential, even when things go wrong."
Ryan’s perspective on leadership is shaped by his experience both in construction and as a business leader. "What we do is dangerous," he said, discussing the risks involved in Mt. Carmel’s daily operations, from heavy equipment to live traffic situations. He also underscored the importance of trust and accountability, not only for safety but for creating a culture where employees feel supported and valued.
