In 2024, Mt. Carmel Stabilization Group partnered with Clay County to address a six-mile stretch of Hickory Hill Lane. Our team worked closely with the county engineers from concept to completion, providing a custom solution that would give the road the long-term stability it required.
Identifying the Problem
During our initial assessment, we discovered that the road’s base was compromised by chemical contamination, and higher dosages of cement during mix design testing were not yielding the necessary strength to create a durable roadway.
Tailored Solution
To address the unique conditions of this road, Mt. Carmel Stabilization Group employed a custom-engineered solution. We began by conducting detailed soil testing, which revealed the presence of a contaminant that was affecting the road’s structural integrity. After further investigation, we proposed an innovative approach, including a 20% addition of the existing base thickness with virgin aggregate, combined with a 6% cement application.
This multi-step process included:
- Preliminary Testing: Our team collected bulk samples at three different locations from the existing road to understand the chemical composition and existing soil conditions. Our initial FDR mix design testing confirmed the need for a more tailored solution.
- Virgin Aggregate Replacement: The inclusion of virgin aggregate in the proposed FDR layer ensured the cement-treated FDR base could meet the desired strength to support heavier traffic.
- Cement Stabilization: The road was treated with 6% cement by weight, which was mixed into the virgin aggregate and existing pavement, creating a robust, long-lasting foundation.
Execution and Results
Our crews worked efficiently to implement this solution over the six-mile stretch, ensuring minimal disruption to local traffic. This was followed with a standard oil and chip application. By the end of the project, the results were clear. The county engineers were pleased with the outcome, as the road now boasts a significantly stronger base and smoother surface, prepared to handle increased traffic with reduced maintenance needs.
